I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count, usually by someone who’s curious but not quite sure what naturopathy actually involves, or whether it’s right for them.
The honest answer? People see naturopaths for all sorts of reasons. Some come because they’ve tried everything else and nothing’s worked. Others arrive feeling overwhelmed by conflicting health advice online and want someone to help them make sense of it all. And plenty show up simply because they want to feel better, but they’re not sure where to start.
After 12 years of working with clients across Australia, I’ve noticed some common threads in why people book that first appointment. Let me walk you through what I see most often, and hopefully help you figure out whether naturopathy might be a good fit for you.
When Your Doctor Says “Everything’s Normal” But You Don’t Feel Normal
This is probably the most common scenario I encounter. You’ve had blood tests, maybe even several rounds of them. Your GP says everything looks fine. But you know something’s off.
Maybe you’re exhausted all the time, even after a full night’s sleep. Or you’re dealing with digestive issues that have been brushed off as “just IBS” with no real plan forward. Perhaps your periods are horrendous, but you’ve been told that’s just how it is for some people.
Naturopaths tend to look at a broader picture than what shows up on standard pathology. We’re interested in patterns, how your sleep affects your digestion, how stress shows up in your skin, why your energy crashes at 3pm every day. We’re also willing to investigate functional markers that might not be “abnormal” enough to warrant medical concern, but could explain why you’re struggling.
I’m not suggesting you ignore your doctor’s advice, far from it. But there’s space for both approaches. Your GP focuses on diagnosing and managing disease. I focus on optimising function and addressing the underlying imbalances that might be making you feel rubbish, even if they don’t constitute a medical diagnosis.
When You’re Tired of Trial-and-Error with Supplements
Walk into any health food shop and you’ll be confronted with thousands of products, all claiming to fix something. It’s overwhelming, and frankly, expensive if you’re just guessing.
I see plenty of clients who’ve spent hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on supplements that either didn’t work or made them feel worse. They’ve followed Instagram influencers’ recommendations, tried their friend’s protocol, or grabbed whatever was on special at the chemist.
Here’s what I do differently: I actually assess you. Not a generic version of someone with your symptoms, but you specifically, your health history, your current lifestyle, what you’ve already tried, what’s realistic for your budget and routine.
Then I recommend targeted support based on that assessment. Sometimes that means supplements, but often it means dietary changes, stress management techniques, or sleep hygiene improvements that don’t cost you anything beyond a bit of time and commitment.
And when I do recommend supplements, I explain exactly why, what to expect, and how long you’ll likely need them. No guesswork, no mystery protocols, no endless bottles cluttering your bathroom cabinet.
When You Want Someone to Actually Listen
I give you a full hour in your first consultation. Not 15 minutes. Not a rushed appointment where you’re watching the clock. A full hour where we dig into what’s going on for you.
That might sound excessive, but here’s why it matters: health issues rarely exist in isolation. Your digestive problems might be connected to your stress levels. Your skin flare-ups might be linked to what you’re eating or how you’re sleeping. Your exhaustion could be related to nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or just trying to do too much with too little support.
I need to understand the full picture to help you effectively. That means asking questions about things that might seem unrelated, your childhood health, your stress levels, your relationships, your work environment, even your digestion when you came in to talk about anxiety.
It’s not intrusive curiosity. It’s connecting the dots.
When Medication Isn’t Enough (Or Isn’t an Option)
Some clients come to me because they’re on medication but still symptomatic. Others can’t tolerate medications or prefer to try other approaches first. And some are managing conditions where medication isn’t really an option anyway.
Let me be clear: I’m not anti-medication. If you need medication, take it. But medication isn’t always the whole answer, and it’s definitely not the only tool available.
I work alongside your medical treatment. If you’re on medication for thyroid dysfunction, we can still address nutritional deficiencies, optimise your diet, and support your body’s function. If you’re managing anxiety with prescribed medication, we can layer in nervous system support, dietary changes, and lifestyle strategies that help you feel more stable overall.
None of this is about replacing what’s working. It’s about filling in the gaps.
When You’re Dealing with Chronic Issues That Won’t Shift
IBS, eczema, migraines, hormonal chaos, these are the conditions I see constantly. They’re often dismissed as “just something you have to live with,” which is frustrating when they’re significantly impacting your quality of life.
Naturopathy tends to be particularly useful for chronic functional conditions. These are issues where your body’s systems aren’t working optimally, even though there’s nothing structurally wrong or no clear disease process.
We look for triggers, patterns, and imbalances. We investigate food intolerances, gut health, nutrient status, hormone balance, inflammation markers, stress response, all the things that influence how your body functions day-to-day.
And we build a plan that addresses those factors systematically, rather than just suppressing symptoms.
When You’re Confused by Conflicting Health Advice
The internet is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to health information. You can research anything, but you’ll also find a dozen conflicting opinions for every health concern.
Keto or vegan? Intermittent fasting or grazing? Supplements or whole foods? High intensity exercise or gentle movement? Coffee is good for you, no wait, it’s terrible, no actually, it’s fine in moderation…
It’s exhausting.
One of the most valuable things I do is help clients cut through this noise. We figure out what actually applies to your situation, based on your health history, your goals, and what’s realistic for your life.
I’m not interested in trends or what’s popular on wellness Instagram. I’m interested in what works for you, specifically, and what you can actually sustain long-term.
When You Want to Be Proactive About Your Health
Not everyone who sees me is unwell. Some clients just want to optimise their health before problems develop, particularly if they have a family history of certain conditions.
Maybe you’ve watched a parent struggle with cardiovascular issues or diabetes, and you want to take steps now to reduce your own risk. Perhaps you’re planning a pregnancy and want to prepare your body properly. Or you’re approaching perimenopause and want to navigate it as smoothly as possible.
This is where naturopathy really shines, helping you build a strong foundation before you need it.
When You’re Overwhelmed and Need a Clear Plan
Here’s something I wish more people knew: you don’t need to have all the answers before you book an appointment. You don’t need to come with a perfect health history or a clear idea of what’s wrong. You don’t need to have tried everything already.
You can show up feeling confused, frustrated, overwhelmed, or just tired of feeling below par. That’s completely fine. In fact, that’s exactly why I’m here.
My job is to help you make sense of what’s happening, figure out where to start, and build a realistic plan that you can actually follow. No overwhelm, no expensive protocols you can’t afford, no complicated meal plans that require you to spend three hours in the kitchen every day.
Just clear, practical steps forward.
Is Naturopathy Regulated in Australia?
Before you book with any practitioner, it’s worth understanding whether naturopathy is properly regulated in Australia. The short answer is yes, qualified naturopaths complete four-year university degrees and are regulated through professional associations like ATMS and ANTA.
But regulation varies, and not everyone calling themselves a naturopath has the same level of training. It’s worth checking credentials before you commit to working with someone.
What About Online Consultations?
I work exclusively online, which surprises some people initially. “Can you really help me if you’re not physically there?”
Absolutely. The honest truth is that most of what we do in naturopathy relies on a thorough case history, careful listening, and strategic questioning. I don’t need to be in the same room to do any of that.
Online consultations are convenient, comfortable (you’re in your own home), and just as effective as face-to-face appointments. Plus, it means I can work with clients anywhere in Australia, from Sydney to Perth, Brisbane to Adelaide, and everywhere in between.
The Bottom Line
You’d see a naturopath when you want personalised support that looks beyond your symptoms to address underlying causes. When you’re tired of feeling dismissed or confused. When you want practical strategies that fit your actual life, not some idealised wellness fantasy.
You’d see a naturopath, me, specifically, when you want someone calm, realistic, and focused on what actually works, rather than what’s trendy or complicated.
If any of this resonates, I’d genuinely love to work with you. Book a consultation and let’s figure out what’s going on and how we can help you feel better.
