What is Functional Testing?
Going beyond standard pathology to identify imbalances before they become disease
π₯ Standard Pathology Testing
Traditional blood tests ordered by GPs typically use wide “reference ranges” designed to identify disease. Results are often marked “normal” even when levels are suboptimal or approaching dysfunction.
- Goal: Diagnose established disease
- Range: Wide “normal” ranges (95% of population)
- Interpretation: Pass/fail approach
- Focus: What’s wrong (pathology)
- Action: Wait until values are clearly abnormal
Example: TSH of 4.0 might be “normal” on standard testing, but may indicate suboptimal thyroid function causing fatigue and weight issues.
π¬ Functional Testing Approach
Functional testing uses tighter “optimal ranges” and assesses biomarkers not typically measured in standard pathology. This identifies imbalances and deficiencies that contribute to symptoms β before disease develops.
- Goal: Identify dysfunction and optimize health
- Range: Tight “optimal” ranges for vitality
- Interpretation: Spectrum of function
- Focus: What’s not working optimally
- Action: Intervene early to prevent progression
Example: The same TSH of 4.0 would prompt investigation of free T3, T4, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, and iodine levels to understand the full picture.
π‘ When is Functional Testing Recommended?
Unexplained Symptoms
When you have persistent symptoms but standard tests show “normal” results
Targeted Treatment
To identify specific imbalances guiding personalized protocols
Progress Tracking
To objectively measure improvement and refine treatment
Available Functional Tests

DUTCH Hormone Testing
Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones
The gold standard for hormone assessment β measuring sex hormones, cortisol patterns, melatonin, and metabolites through easy at-home urine collection over 24 hours.
π What It Measures:
- Sex Hormones: Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone (and metabolites)
- Cortisol Pattern: 4-5 measurements across the day
- Cortisol Metabolites: Total daily cortisol production
- DHEA: Adrenal androgen levels
- Melatonin: Sleep hormone production
- Organic Acids: B12, B6, glutathione, neurotransmitters
- Hormone Metabolism: How your body processes hormones
β Best For:
- Perimenopause & menopause symptoms
- PMS, PMDD, irregular cycles
- PCOS and hormonal imbalances
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Adrenal dysfunction
- Sleep issues
- Low libido
- Mood swings & anxiety
π° Investment: $450-650 (varies by test panel selected)
π Why DUTCH is Superior to Blood or Saliva Testing:
Unlike single-point blood tests, DUTCH captures hormone patterns over 24 hours and measures metabolites β showing not just hormone levels but how your body processes them. This reveals issues like estrogen dominance, poor cortisol rhythm, or hormone detoxification problems that blood tests miss entirely.
Comprehensive Stool Testing
GI-MAP, MetaBiome & Complete Microbiome Mapping
Advanced DNA-based stool analysis revealing bacteria, parasites, fungi, inflammation markers, digestive function, and gut immune status through a simple at-home stool sample.
π What It Measures:
- Beneficial Bacteria: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, diversity
- Pathogenic Bacteria: H. pylori, C. difficile, dysbiotic species
- Parasites: Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Blastocystis, etc.
- Fungi/Yeast: Candida species and other opportunistic fungi
- Viruses: Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus (some panels)
- Inflammation Markers: Calprotectin, eosinophil protein
- Immune Function: Secretory IgA levels
- Digestive Function: Pancreatic elastase, bile acids, fat absorption
β Best For:
- IBS (constipation, diarrhea, mixed)
- Chronic bloating and gas
- SIBO suspicion
- Food intolerances
- Chronic fatigue
- Skin conditions (acne, eczema)
- Autoimmune conditions
- Mood disorders linked to gut
π° Investment: $450-550 (varies by panel comprehensiveness)
π Why DNA-Based Testing is Superior:
Traditional stool cultures miss 70-80% of gut organisms. DNA-based testing (like GI-MAP) uses PCR technology to detect organisms that don’t grow in lab cultures β identifying parasites, bacteria, and fungi with high accuracy. This means fewer “false negatives” and more actionable information.
Nutrient & Metabolic Testing
Comprehensive Nutritional & Organic Acids Analysis
Detailed assessment of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and cellular metabolic function through blood and/or urine testing.
π What It Measures:
- Vitamins: B12, folate, B6, vitamin D, A, E, K
- Minerals: Iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, copper, iodine
- Amino Acids: Complete amino acid profile
- Fatty Acids: Omega-3, omega-6, ratios
- Antioxidants: CoQ10, glutathione, vitamin C
- Organic Acids: Metabolic function markers
- Mitochondrial Function: Energy production markers
- Neurotransmitter Metabolites: Serotonin, dopamine markers
β Best For:
- Chronic fatigue & low energy
- Brain fog & concentration issues
- Mood disorders
- Hair loss, brittle nails, skin issues
- Poor immune function
- Athletes optimizing performance
- Restrictive diets (vegan, elimination)
- Malabsorption concerns
π° Investment: $350-650 (varies by comprehensiveness)
π Beyond Standard Nutrient Testing:
Standard pathology typically only tests a handful of nutrients when deficiency is suspected. Comprehensive nutrient testing reveals subclinical deficiencies and functional insufficiencies across dozens of nutrients β plus metabolic markers showing how efficiently your cells are using those nutrients.
Food Sensitivity Testing
IgG Food Intolerance Panel (96-200+ foods)
Blood test measuring immune reactions (IgG antibodies) to common foods β identifying delayed food sensitivities that may contribute to inflammation, digestive issues, and systemic symptoms.
π What It Measures:
- Common Foods: Dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, corn
- Grains: Wheat, rye, oats, rice, quinoa
- Proteins: Beef, chicken, fish, shellfish
- Vegetables: Nightshades, cruciferous, etc.
- Fruits: Common fruits and berries
- Nuts & Seeds: Almonds, cashews, sunflower, etc.
- Legumes: Beans, lentils, peanuts
- 96-200+ foods depending on panel selected
β Best For:
- Unexplained bloating after meals
- IBS with unclear triggers
- Chronic inflammation
- Skin conditions (eczema, acne)
- Headaches/migraines
- Joint pain and stiffness
- Brain fog
- Difficulty losing weight
π° Investment: $280-450 (varies by number of foods tested)
β οΈ Important Context on Food Sensitivity Testing:
IgG food testing is controversial in conventional medicine and should be interpreted with caution. Results are best used as a guide for elimination trials, not as definitive “never eat this food again” directives. I always combine test results with symptom tracking and clinical judgment.
Comprehensive Pathology Analysis
Standard Blood Tests Interpreted Through a Functional Lens
Work with your GP to order comprehensive blood panels, then I’ll analyze results using optimal functional ranges β identifying patterns and trends missed by conventional interpretation.
π Recommended Panels:
- Full Blood Count: Red cells, white cells, platelets
- Iron Studies: Ferritin, iron, transferrin, saturation
- Thyroid Panel: TSH, free T3, free T4, antibodies
- Metabolic Panel: Glucose, liver, kidney function
- Lipid Panel: Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides
- Inflammation: CRP, homocysteine
- Vitamin D: 25-OH vitamin D
- B12 & Folate: Active B12, serum folate
β How This Works:
- I provide you with a recommended test list
- You request these tests from your GP (usually bulk-billed)
- GP orders the pathology through standard labs
- You bring results to our consultation
- I analyze using functional/optimal ranges
- We identify patterns and subclinical issues
- Treatment protocol addresses findings
π° Investment: $0 for pathology (GP bulk-bills) + consultation time
π‘ Example: Functional vs. Standard Interpretation
Ferritin Level: 35 ng/mL
Standard interpretation: “Normal” (reference range 15-300 ng/mL) β no action taken.
Functional interpretation: Suboptimal for energy production and thyroid function. Optimal range is 70-100 ng/mL. Low ferritin at 35 likely contributing to fatigue, hair loss, and poor exercise tolerance. Recommend iron supplementation and investigation of why stores are low (absorption issues, heavy periods, etc.).

When is Testing Recommended?
Not everyone needs functional testing β here’s when it’s most valuable
β Testing is Valuable When:
- Symptoms are complex or multi-system
- Standard pathology shows “normal” but symptoms persist
- Previous treatments haven’t worked
- You want data-driven protocols vs. trial-and-error
- Hormonal issues are suspected
- Gut health is clearly involved
- You’re ready to invest in deeper investigation
- Baseline data needed before starting treatment
- Progress tracking would be motivating
- Multiple potential root causes need ruling in/out
β Testing May Not Be Needed When:
- Symptoms are straightforward with clear triggers
- Budget is limited and clinical assessment is sufficient
- You’re willing to try empirical treatment first
- Recent comprehensive testing already completed
- Symptoms are mild and treatment is low-risk
- Obvious lifestyle factors need addressing first
- Testing wouldn’t change the treatment approach
- You prefer to start conservatively
- Standard pathology from GP already reveals clear issues
π‘ My Testing Philosophy
I never push testing as a requirement. Many clients achieve excellent results without any specialized testing β using clinical assessment, symptom tracking, and evidence-based protocols. When I do recommend testing, it’s because I believe the information will genuinely improve outcomes or save time/money by avoiding ineffective treatments. Testing is a tool, not a necessity, and the decision is always yours.

Functional Testing FAQs
Common questions about testing, costs, and process
Do I need a GP referral for functional testing?
No GP referral is needed for most functional tests (DUTCH, GI-MAP, nutrient panels, food sensitivity). These are ordered directly through specialized laboratories. However, if you want standard pathology (blood tests) bulk-billed through Medicare, you’ll need to request these from your GP. I can provide you with a recommended test list to take to your doctor.
Are functional tests covered by health insurance?
Most Australian private health funds do NOT cover the cost of specialized functional testing (DUTCH, GI-MAP, etc.). However, some funds may provide partial rebates for naturopathy consultations where results are reviewed. Standard pathology ordered by your GP is typically bulk-billed through Medicare at no cost to you.
How long does it take to get results back?
Turnaround times vary by test type and laboratory location. Most tests take 2-3 weeks from when the lab receives your sample. DUTCH hormone testing is typically 2 weeks, GI-MAP is 2-3 weeks, nutrient testing is 2-3 weeks. You’ll be notified as soon as results are available.
Is functional testing scientifically valid?
This varies by test type. Some functional tests (like DUTCH hormone testing and DNA-based stool analysis) use validated methodologies published in peer-reviewed research. Others (like IgG food sensitivity) are more controversial in conventional medicine. I only recommend tests I believe provide clinically useful information, and I’m always transparent about the evidence level and limitations of any test recommended.
Do I have to do testing to work with you?
Absolutely not. Testing is always optional and recommended only when it would genuinely improve outcomes or efficiency. Many clients achieve excellent results without any specialized testing β using detailed clinical assessment, symptom tracking, and evidence-based treatment protocols. I never require testing as a condition of care.
Can I order tests myself without consulting with you?
Some laboratories allow direct-to-consumer ordering, but I don’t recommend this approach. Functional test results require professional interpretation to be clinically meaningful β they’re not straightforward “high/low” readings. Without proper context and clinical assessment, results can be misinterpreted or lead to inappropriate self-treatment. Testing is most valuable when integrated with comprehensive consultation.
What happens if my test results are “normal”?
Even if results fall within normal ranges, the test provides valuable information by ruling out certain causes and helping narrow our focus. “Normal” results combined with persistent symptoms often indicate we need to look elsewhere or use different assessment methods. No test is perfect, and clinical assessment always takes priority over test results when there’s a discrepancy.
How often should I retest?
This depends on the test type and your individual situation. Hormone testing might be repeated after 3-6 months of treatment. Gut testing might be retested after completing a protocol (4-6 months). Nutrient testing might be repeated annually or as needed. I don’t recommend unnecessary retesting β we only retest when the information would change treatment decisions or confirm suspected improvement.
Are the test kits difficult to use at home?
Most test kits are designed for easy at-home collection with clear instructions. DUTCH testing involves collecting small urine samples on filter paper at specific times β quite straightforward. Stool collection is exactly what you’d expect but comes with proper supplies. Finger-prick blood spots require a small lancet prick (like diabetics use). If you have concerns about collection, we can discuss this before ordering.
What if I can’t afford testing but want to work with you?
That’s completely fine. We can absolutely work together without functional testing. I’ll conduct a thorough clinical assessment during consultations and create evidence-based treatment protocols based on your symptoms, health history, and presentation. If appropriate, I can recommend standard pathology tests your GP can order (usually bulk-billed). Many clients achieve excellent outcomes without specialized testing.
Can I use test results from other practitioners?
Yes! If you’ve had functional testing done elsewhere (within the last 6-12 months depending on test type), bring those results to your consultation. I’m happy to review and interpret previous testing to avoid unnecessary repeat testing. This applies to both functional tests and standard pathology from your GP.
